The Drone Machine
A drone instrument for macOS. It is always on: set a root, shape one overtone spectrum for the whole instrument, and it breathes and drifts on cycles that never line up, so it never repeats. Built by Mouritz for the music on this site.
What it is

Six layers
Saw, square, sine, triangle, additive, eight wavetables, grain clouds from built-in or dropped-in samples, or a self-oscillating feedback voice. Each layer tuned to the root in equal temperament, just intonation, Pythagorean or meantone. - 02
Harmonic Field
One spectrum of 32 partials for the whole instrument, drawn by hand or from a shape, with tilt, odd/even and formant. The additive layers and the resonators follow it. - 03
Texture
Noise, eight tuned resonators, plucks, a bow, scrapes and rolling stones, all into the same bank. - 04
Effects
Drive, ensemble, three delays in series with the third reversed, a large reverb with shimmer, bloom, freeze and hold, a convolution reverb with six spaces and your own impulse responses, damage, EQ and a limiter. Every send keeps the low end dry. - 05
Modulation that never lines up
Three unsynced LFOs, two drift sources, a looping envelope, a follower, four macros, a slow swell and a 16-slot matrix. One button makes every cycle incommensurate. - 06
Evolve
Eight parameters wander between limits you set on their own unrelated clocks, for minutes or hours, while Choreography brings the layers in and out. - 07
Looper
A tape loop of up to a minute, overdub with feedback, played back at any speed or in reverse. - 08
Simple view
Ten controls when you want them: root, tuning, character, drone, the four macros, reverb and master. Every preset answers the macros the same way: Dark / Bright, Motion, Space, Grit.
Screens
Trial and licence
Download the installer and use everything for 7 days. During the trial a voice reminds you every twenty seconds or so; after it the output is muted until a key is entered.
A licence is €49, once, paid through Stripe. The key is issued to your name and email and shown the moment the payment goes through. Activating takes one short connection to mouritz.no; after that the key is checked inside the plug-in offline, nothing phones home, and it keeps working without us. One key is active on two computers at a time, and you move it yourself with a Deactivate button. Updates within version 1 are included.
Requirements
macOS 12 or later, Apple silicon and Intel. Audio Unit, VST3 and a standalone app. Tested in Logic Pro, Ableton Live and Bitwig. The installer is signed and notarized.
